Hey friends, we’re talking blog email subscribers today. Building up your email list is often ignored but is super, super important. Once you have subscribers you can send newsletters that share your posts (more traffic), highlight a new product (more sales), offer your help (make friends and network), and much, much more.
When I first started blogging, I knew having an email list was something I needed to tackle but I put it on the backburner for a while. Why? It was so overwhelming. Getting the subscribers wasn’t my issue, in fact, on my first blog, I had over 3,000 subscribers when the blog was only 6 months old. My problem was what to do with the email list. I wanted a pretty newsletter but I didn’t know html or Photoshop. So, it kept getting put off and put off.
Finally, I dove in head first and haven’t looked back since. I’m going to share 12 easy ways to get blog subscribers PLUS what to do when you have them!
Here we go:
1.) Add Lead Magnets
Lead magnets are so important. You ever visit a blog and they promise to give you a cool little checklist or template or cheat sheet for free? It’s not really free because you have to enter your name and email address in a form, then you get it, right? That’s a lead magnet! In exchange for giving away a resource, you get the user’s email address. Then, they’re on your email list. Simple!
I recommend adding lead magnets to EVERY.SINGLE.POST. Yes, really. It might sound overwhelming but just think for a minute. What’s your niche? What are you writing about? Now, what do you think your reader would find useful. Instead of just sharing it on your post, type it up in a Word document, save it and attach it to your email sign up form. That’s it!
2.) Add Opt-In’s all over your blog
First, in order to do this one, you’ll need a newsletter management service like ConvertKit, Mailchimp, Mad Mimi, etc. I highly recommend ConvertKit. They are the easiest thing ever and you’ll get all your forms, broadcasts, and lead magnets super organized.
With ConvertKit, you just get the ConvertKit plugin on WordPress. Then you’ll get a shortcode that you can insert anywhere on your blog (sidebar, in post, etc.).
Add your opt-in to these places:
- In your blog post (lead magnet)
- In your side bar
- On your social media pages
- In your email signature
3.) Get on social media
So first, open up a handful of social media accounts for the blog if you haven’t already (you should be doing this anyway). Then, add your email signup form to your page. That’s it!
4.) Throw a giveaway
Brainstorm so really cool giveaway ideas. Pick one and then throw your giveaway.
Pro Tip: I did a collaborative giveaway with 5 other brands: Boardbooster, Making Sense of Cents blog, Social Quant and a few others. I got tons of entries and it was a huge success. You can also do this with bloggers.
There are giveaway tools that make entry a social action, like tweeting your giveaway, liking your Facebook page, and even subscribing to your email list. Do a few of these each year and grow your email list like crazy.

5.) Use the SumoMe Plugin
SumoMe is an UH-MAZING plugin. They offer so many useful tools for free and then if you upgrade, you get access to even more awesome tools. I do the Pro plan at $25/month and it’s so worth it!
They have tons of email list building tools. My favorites are List Builder and Welcome Mat. I was getting 10-30 subscibers daily on my first blog. Grab this NOW my friends!
